1980 Honda CB750F SuperSport questions...looking to buy.

#1 Unread post by Andy G »

I actually found what I think is exactly what I want/need for a first bike. It's a 1980 Honda 750 SuperSport. Has 37k miles. It hasn't been run yet this year. It's in fairly decent visual/physical condition, not sure about the mechanical.

I'm a big guy - 6'4" tall, 228#, 34-36" inseam (depends on what jeans I'm wearing!).

THe bike seemed to fit me well when I sat on it. Assuming it runs (I have two good friends that are mechanics waiting in the wings...), would this be a good first/learner bike?

The guy wants 600/obo, so I'm thinking I could get it for 450-500.

Thoughts? What to look for?

Thanks!
Andy

That's alot of my miles, and if the bike hasn't been run this year, chances are you're going to have sludge in the fuel system.

Bring one of you're mechanic friends with you when you go look at it, to make sure it checks out. I wouldn't usually recomend that bike to a begginer due to it's weight, but with your size you should be fine as long as you take it slow, and if you could get a good running bike for $450-jump on it! :P

What is the deal with this bike and people riding them so much!

I am looking at a super sport this evening....

40k miles but the guy has owned it for 15 years.

Yours sounds like a good deal.

Thanks for the replies.

Got the bike for $425. Took both my motorcycle/mechanic buddies with me. It didn't fire right away...turns out you need gasoline in the tank! Whoodathunkit?

Anyhow...once she fired up all three of us took her for a spin up and down the road. Brakes...check. Clutch...check. Engine...check. No funny sounds, smooth running.

Brought it home and took the windshield off, as well as the highway pegs and the rear sit back/storage tray. Spent a few hours buffing and polishing, and the bike looks GREAT now! If they guy selling it woulda done that, he probably could have got 1400 bucks for it.

I'll get some pictures up ASAP.

Thanks!
Andy

Right On Brotha! You got a sweet deal on that one, I wouldn't be suprised if you get another 100 thousand miles out of it.

CB750s make good all around general purpose bikes, and if cared for, the engines are bulletproof. There's not much reason to replace one. That's why people tend to hang on to them and keep riding them for years.

A friend of mine is about to break the 100,000 mile mark on his '82 CB750. He's the original owner and the engine has never been opened up.
