This is why n00bs keep getting 600s+

#1 Unread post by Fatman »

Cause of the f*cking dealerships. Today I went to go check out the Ninja 500R, which is highly recommend on these boards for a beginer bike. Well I get there, and the guy doesnt even know what Im talking about for the first 5 mins, then he finds the bike, and they have 2 in stock.
So he starts getting my info, and I take a look at them, and he pushes me getting a 600 sayings is basically the same thing, and then get a 650. I kept telling him no, I dont like the price and power I want something I can start with. So I leave because they wanted a larger down payment then what I could give at the moment. He calls me back later, saying for the same down payment he could give me the 650R, I was like, WTF!!! I told him no, 500R or no deal and ask him to call me back only if he had something. Currently Im talking to a Suzuki dealer about a GS500. Just thought I would share my n00bie experience with you guys.

Personally, I would have taken the 650r, because it has a similar power band to the sv650, but looks a helluva alot better.

Well I'm not sure about the looking better part.

But it'd still be more expensive than what he currently wants. Same down payment or not.

Be wary of the GS500. I just sat on one about an hour ago and it absoleutely killed my knees. The Ninja fits (and looks) awesome but the GS, felt like my knees were gonna be rammed through the fairing.

Maybe I just have bony knees.

Noobs get 600s because that's what all their friends have or told them to get.

That and they want a bike that looks fast and goes fast regardless of how fast it will kill them.

Fit and comfort are very personal... it isn't just a matter body geometery but also rider expectations. Someone who expects to lean forward and tuck may be miserable on a bike that her twin sister who expects to sit upright might find totally comfortable.

Best to try it for yourself.

Well...

Im sure commision has alot to do with a salesperson upselling you, but maybe he was right in some respects. Consider this:

You buy a Ninja 500, for around $5500. Your at a dealer, so you are probably financing the bike along with the other costs. So, when its all said and done you financed the bike, gear, service contract, and taxes/fees. Lets be honest, your probably in the hole for 6,000-7,500 bucks, thats entirely typical.

Now you have you nice Ninja 500 and a nice 36-48 month note at about 120-150/month. Fast forward two months and your regretting getting the bike because its ugly and has no grunt. Well, you only have 46 months left on your note, so you better like it. Hmmmm... I dont think financing that 500cc 40hp bike was the best idea. Your only choice at this point is to trade it in, taking a huge loss.

Of course, you might be like some people around here and not have one care about how much power your bike has or how it looks. If your that person, by all means finance that 500cc bike.

I would highly recommend buying used with a few months of your savings, rather than financing a bike you could grow out of in two months.

That really sucks. I had absolutely no problem With the sales guys where I got my bikes (2 different dealers). They answered every question I asked and made no "personal" opinions. Both were good experiences.
