I am not totally new to tearing down carbs and cleaning the gunk out. But I have run across something different on this project. The carbs were basically dry for quite a while. They have some sort of crystalized stuff on the inside of the bowl area. It is on the floats too. I have been cleaning it off with gas and carb cleaner but I am wondering if something else wouldn't work better (read: faster). I am wondering if this crystaline stuff would be eaten away by maybe vinegar or some other weak acid?
I don't mind doing it the hard way..jammin' fingers and getting high on Carb cleaner....but was just wondering.

Carb dip would be easiest if you know anyone who has one. Other than that, I have no secrets. Spray on carb cleaner is VERY weak though. Might want to see if the local parts place has anything stronger (like a dip)

Are you talking about a solution to use or an actual cleaner?
I would love to be able to afford an ultrasonic cleaner big enough to set the entire rack of carbs in. I could just leave it in for a couple of hours and then...wha-La....clean carbs.

I guess the next logical question is:

What solvents do you all use when cleaning carbs?

Berryman's B-9 Chem-Dip is some wicked stuff! It'll dissolve practically everything non-metallic. If you use this stuff, don't even let it splash on anything you don't want broken down molecularly. That includes the rubber diaphragms in CV carbs. Gunk makes a similar product, too.

There's a more environment-friendly method that some guys on another forum have come up with, too. I haven't tried this yet, but they're saying it works great and boiling water and baking soda is apparently all you need. If you're interested, you can find the particulars at kzrider.com.

Having used this awful stuff to clean lots of automotive carbs, I can attest....through ugly, expensive experience....that carb dip will dissolve/warp/swell anything which is not iron, aluminum, brass, or copper. Make sure ALL rubber or plastic items are removed before putting the parts into the "dip."
