i ride a 04 suzuki marauder 800 and im ready to put some upgrades into it. first things first, i want to build a new set of exhaust pipes for it. sadly, my understanding of carburated engine performance is not up to par.
i guess ill get to the point and ask some questions.
Adding a freer flowing exhaust will allow more air to flow with decreased backpressure; do i have to in turn add a freer flowing intake to maintain or increace performance?
Just some general disscussion on carburation and engine performance will help me a lot.

as a general rule, more air in, more air out. Also, a re-jetting will be needed to get the most out of intake/exhaust mods.

More air in and out with the same amount of fuel will just lead to a lean running bike. You are better off doing all three at once.

good advise i presume, heres some fuel for more...
something ive noticed is the lack of aftermarket parts for the suzuki marauder. very sad. Thats alright with me though because id rather build everything myself anyway (i have access to a full machine shop here at PennState Uni). However, i have yet to find even one aftermarket air intake system for this bike and that has me woundering if its possible or necessary to change that. ive opened up the airbox below the seat and found one intake and, boy, is it restricted. let alone being hidden under the airbox, but half of the intake hole is covered up with a piece of plastic! i imagine there is a design benefit from all this air restriction; better fuel economy and what-not. Anywho, i'll ask another question now...
If i now have to build a custom intake system as well as my exhaust, what are some engineering and design parameters to consider?

Any engineers out there? Is this a case of a simple mass conservation with heat addition? is it really necessary to 'engineer' this before i build it or is that going to deep with this? I am an aspiring engineer so this is my attempt to use what ive learned thus far:)

If you are just adding pipes you probably can get by without a re-jet. If you add say a K & N air filter then yes you will need to re-jet but the re-jet kit's aren't too pricey from what I've heard.

When my Spousette bought her Maurader , it had Cobra slash cuts on it and it had never been rejetted . Guess what ? She had to have it re-jetted .
There are a ton of after market products for the Suzuki models . You're just not looking hard enough .

actually, ive looked quite long and hard for aftermarket parts. Cobra slashcuts are not what i would call "custom" exhaust pipes. If i had wanted some cheap and easy slip-ons, i would actually go straight for those cobras but that is not what i want. What i meant by saying there is a lack or aftermarket parts was that there is a lack or performance parts; the things that i will have too much difficultly attempting to build myself. When it comes to airkits, there are none and that is what my original question was about. mintbread's answer to my question seemed quite logical...

ok sure, i suppose it is very possible that i didnt look hard enough so if anyone knows of a good intake system for the marauder, please let me know!

Now you're talking about modification and not customization .
