Does the place where you work seem to have an overabundance of these critters? Feel like you work in a wildlife refuge for the brain dead? Well me too.

So far today I've been harassed because i wouldn't just hand over the office copy of Office2003. Asked to fix 4 "thingamajiggies" that "weren't doing right." And called names because i wouldn't give a user install rights so he could put some farking Fishing game on his work computer.

I don't expect my users to know how to troubleshoot their machines. Or even have an inkling of what really went wrong. But these are doctors and nurses. Thingamajiggies?!??!

Gyahhhh. Just found another one in my server room looking for something to unplug so she could charge her mobil phone.


I need a drink. And a vacation. Preferably somewhere sandy, warm, and with scantily clad females.


Sorry. Had to let that out. Or go around and start welding collars onto thier necks.

oh man that sucks, I can't imagine having to deal with people like that every day. Looks like it's time to puchase a mini fridge and stock it with various....ummm juices....yeah juice.

LOL...looking to unplug something so she could charge her phone? How old are these people? Aren't they supposed to be the 'tech' generation? Anyone born after 1970 should have pretty basic knowledge of computer systems. Sorry you're surrounded by stupidty.

I feel for ya. I need to take some classes so that I can start answering some of the questions I get asked. I'm far from an I.T. person but, since I have installed my own RAM, Hardrives, etc, I'm the "computer geek" at my EMS station.

BUT, in their defense, I'm one of 3 that were born after 1970 and, our company I.T. guy has been to our division ONCE in 2 1/2 years. Our computers run like "poo poo" and need some updates and routine maintenance bad.

We can't even run disk defrag without administrative approval.

Not just something, she was reaching for the Core Router plug where it goes into the UPS.

There is a seriously surprising lack of computer savvy around. Things no one would consider doing to their toaster, these people do to computers.

The average age here would be ~40-50. 95% I would estimate with at least an associates degree. 40% with a bachelors. And a smattering of masters, and doctorates.

Generally speaking, the more letters after the name, the more often i get called with silly, flat out stupid, and or asinine problems or requests. The thingamajiggies was from a phd. Proudly framed on the wall behind the desk

Lesson learned. Fancy book learnin don't mean you got the good sense god gave a panicky ferett.

Lock the server room and leave a copy of the key with your uppers. Or get a very very nasty dog to guard the room.

I love when people complain that their Internet radio stations keep buffering and want me to "speed up" the Internet. Then complain when access to said Internet radio station is blocked. Then don't understand that Internet radio stations are against the user policy because the hog bandwidth. They think I can summon my vast power of IT expertise and create an extra T1 worth of bandwidth at anytime.

It's one of those perma-locked rooms.... which helps when the door had been wedged open.

At least the itchy fingers syndrome didn't extend to swapping cables around on my switch. /shudder.

It's wild some of the stuff people will do to their work computers. Coffee flavored keyboards are a big one. Had one that jammed a pencil into the power supply exhaust fan of her desktop unit because it was too noisy. With that being the only exhaust fan....it got real quiet.

Of course users will browse to anything on the net. Ohhhh pretty pictures. Of course i'll accept that warning dialog, it's pretty! It MUST be safe!


I sometimes wonder if they go home and lube up the VCR before popping in their daily allowance of popcorn. Then decide to give their fuse boxes a nice washing with a soapy rag.

Some days IT is the best gig on the planet. Others you would be happier being a test dummy at an experimental weapons test site.

Aye, these are the same folks who will blame you when something goes wrong. Lock it up!
