Was just sitting here thinking about intolerance and rascits and that sort of thing. And was thinking, in a sense by telling them that its wrong to hate races of people or watever it is that is socially unacceptable, isnt it in a sense intollerant of us to not be tollerant of their beliefs/ideas. Not at all trying to defend them, i think its wrong. Just was thinking that in a slight sense telling them that they are wrong or sick is being intollerant as they are. . . what ya'll think?

Hypocrisy is the way of the world. Its really all about who's in power at the momment. party's thought it was alright to be racist, so did slave owners and the like. Now people think its wrong. So now it is wrong.

Intolerance will always exist. Whether it be to a group of people or to a certain attitude. The only thing you can do is stand with your beliefs and watch the world sway. One day your in the majority the other the minority.

No, you should be able to form your own beliefs, but intolerance is when you inflict them on others rather than keep them to yourself... Its not the racist personality thats the problem, its your treatment of other ethnic groups that is derived from your racist personality, that causes you to act in a socially unacceptable manner, this is the intolerant behaviour.

Its a very fine difference that i haven't explained too well, but it is present.

Essentially the difference between keeping it in your own mind, and the physical manifestation visible to others

Nib summed it up...intolerance of intolerance, interesting, but not practical. People are free to believe what they will, feel how they will...its only when you take that belief and intrude on another's personal freedoms do we need to put a stop to it.

Well, in the states, you have the freedom to say what you want, no matter how assinine or hatefull your opinion may be. thats your constitution. thats Why the KKK are allowed to hold their rallies. It may be biggoted but its their right. Makes ya scratch your head a bit doesnt it?

Thats not entirely true though. I can be intolerant of your veiws and just because I never act pysichally on it, doesnt mean I'm not intolerant. In general your beliefs and your veiws are the intolerance.

For example I don't accept your view of intolerance.

Not really. It's that way on purpose. The moment that you have some government entity regulating what is "acceptable speech", then you have opened the door for legitimate opposition to be silenced by the party in power. The only way to avoid this is to not allow a government to pass judgement on the acceptability of a persons speech and writings. Of course, that means you have to allow bigots, fools and anyone else to have their say, but it's the price we pay to ensure that one is truly free to speak their mind on any issue.

The U.S. has not always been a bastion of free speech (even though it is in the constitution). As late as WWI people who protested against the war or the government were thrown in jail for violating sedition laws.

Although freedom of speech appeared to be constitutional protected, sedition laws seemed in direct opposition of such rights. The Sedition Act of 1798 punished speech, or publication of :

"writings against the government of the United States, or either house of the Congress of the United States, or the President of the United States, with intent to defame the said government, or either house of the said Congress, or the said President, or to bring them, or either of them, into contempt or disrepute;

While such prosecutions became unthinkable in the last half of the 20th century, the tide may be turning. Last year a woman in New Mexico had her computer and papers confiscated by the FBI after she wrote a letter to a newspaper that was critical of the current presidential administration. She was informed that she was under investigation for sedition.

i agree. not practical and mostly just me babbleing, but thought it was kind of intresting and somethign to ponder.
