So, I have been working on my 83 Maxim 650 today. I got the battery hooked in and attempted the starter switch (just to see if the starter will work) and all I get is a click from what I believe is the starter cylanoid (a little round device that is hooked between the battery and the starter motor) just a click, no turning over. I think the cylanoid is shot, am I right?

If you hear a click from the sylanoid, that means it is doing its job. Sounds like the battery is low. IF the battery is good, you may have starter motor issues. But check that battery first.

battery seems good BTW, all lights are bright and the horn is strong.... But I'll try swapping it out with my new battery and see what happens.

Hiya Pete, starters are the biggest comsumers of electricity on your bike. Most require OVER 12 volts to spin up. Your lights and whatnot will still light up even when the battery is low on volts.

I changed the battery out, still the same thing, so I took off the starter cylanoid, brought it to a starter shop, they tested it, and pronounced it dead...so one new cylanoid later, I now have the starter motor turning over...w00t.

Corsco, Pretty much any advice you have given has been spot on, not bad considering you cant see what the problem is and are relying on people describing a "doohicky on the thingamabob that aint workin"
