The guy in this thread who crashed is a friend of mine that I have ridden with before. The cause of the crash according to him was a combination of distraction and target fixation. End result he ended up lowsiding and sliding/tumbling about 150ft. His gear definately did its job, his only injury was a bruised ankle.
This guy is most definately not a new rider, he has ridden for several years including some track experience and the R1 was his 4th bike, yes it can even happen to experienced riders.

Great post! I saw no fewer than 5 bikers wearing nothing more than t-shirts and shorts today. I'm glad to see someone so young is responsible and wearing the proper gear. Unfortunately, of the 5 bikers, 3 were in their 40's or 50's proving that stupid is ageless.

I love hearing stories about people being glad they wore the right gear as opposed to wishing they had.
Bummer about the bike, but I'm glad that he is ok.

Me too, I want to know how the accident happened. I want to know if the bike is rebuildable. I want to know if his insurance will cover. I won't be able to sleep tonight until I know!

Story goes he was briefly distracted by a group of bikers parked in a rest stop and when he looked back he was too deep in the turn to keep the bike from going wide, target fixated on the shoulder, and caught gravel as he was trying to pull the bike back in line.

Just out of interest, the group of bikers that caught his eye didn't include any pretty girls did it? 
Give him our best on it and our comiserations on the damage to the Bike.

I saw a lot of people out without gear yesterday, only one made me flinch. A guy was out with a little girl, not more then 5 or 6 who was only wearing a skull cap and a little pink shirt. I can understand an adult choosing not to cover up... but this is your kid man.
I gotta ask Zoo, would you let your kids on the back without gear? Would you let them on the back in the first place?
