Change engine cover

Maybe i'm missing something simple here. This is my first bike and i basically don't know sh*t about them.
Well i swapped out my engine cover. Everything seems fine until i go to switch gears. It works at first a couple of times, as if all is seated correctly on the motor end, then the cable lug (on the end of the clutch cable) slides partway out of the engine cover and of course then, i can no longer work the clutch. i've gone through this song and dance about 3 times, and i was just wondering if anybody can help me out by letting me know how i can keep that damned thing seated.
