I just picked up a honda VLX and am trying to find some saddle bags for it but can't find if i need to put on some saddlebag supports or if throw over saddlebags will work. I am mostly concerned about the bags getting caught in wheel well. I'm also trying to find saddlebags that won't break my wallet if anybody has any reccomendations.

I had the VLX till recently. It's a great bike, and hopefully you'll enjoy it.
As for saddle bag support, I'd strongly recommend it for the throw over saddlebags. Without the u-bar support thingies they have a tendency to get caught up in moving parts. On the bright side, when I purchased my saddlebags and support bar it cost me under $200. Good luck, I'd try browsing on the web for a bit.

go with the throwovers, and get the stays. I ordered a set of bags from tucker rocky through my local honda dealer for my vtx, spend 200 bucks on it all, and they've been perfect

Throw over bags may be the cheapest way to go but think long and hard at the damage they might do by rubbing on painted surfaces etc.
If the bag rides on the fender, it might rub right through all that nice clearcoat and paint eventually.
