Foot Peg Use (w/ pic)

#1 Unread post by BigChickenStrips »

ok, so i'll probably get mocked for asking this because its a dumb question but how are you supposed to have your feet on the pegs while riding?

i know for starts and stops, you need your feet over the brake and shifter because you have to downshift and brake to stop. but when your out in the country or on the interstate and you are riding at a basically set speed, is it okay to move your feet back so the toes of your boots are resting on the pegs?

i find when im out in the country riding, if i turn sharply, i tend to leave my foot down like im about to upshift but just let it hang there and my boot scrapes and scares the "poo poo" out of me.

maybe im just late to the party an everyone puts their feet further back on the pegs when they arent shifting or braking, but i dont know. i find it it be more comfortable but if its unsafe (cant get to back brake as quickly) then i wont do it.

like the pic below:

In traffic my foot is almost always above the shifter (ready to start downshifting in case of a panic stop or need to go uphill/pass)... on the highway pic 2 is fairly accurate at times, but at times I'll have my heels on the pegs.

I myself usually slide my foot back, so the tip of my toe is almost touching the little shifter rubber thing. works for me so far...

Diez, does your leg not get tired? i think i will continue to put my feet back a bit when i feel it is appropriate. i'll stay ready to shift when there is "stuff" around.

Do whatever is most comfortable. The only time my toes are on the pegs is when I am doing a lot of cornering and need the extra clearance.

I keep my feet above the brake and shifter in town, or when I'm getting close to a stop. Otherwise I pull them back and rest on my toes.

Though I like to vary that on long trips, otherwise my knees lock up.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

I ride 99% of the time with my toes on the pegs. I just slide my foot forward when I need to brake or shift.

HR... any one position gets a little tight after a while. I vary it as needed.. My problem with "toes on the pegs" is that if I have my toes on the pegs my heels go onto the heel rests... and I don't like that 'cause the "heel rests" I'm talking about are actually the mufflers. :)

With my heels on the pegs and my knuckles on the bars the seating position is straight-up-and-down-standard... Feet are neutral above the controls, spine is straight, eyes level... perfect in traffic when you are trying to see and be seen. Unfortunately with my hands on the bars properly I'm leaned foreward a little bit. I've been thinking of making/buying some bar risers for just that reason.
