Setting optimal Idle mixture (xs400)

#1 Unread post by kar_the_terrible »

hi,
Whats t he procedure to set the optimal idle mixture on Mikuni CV carbs? The manual says not to touch these at all, but the guard on the screws is long gone and Im willing to bet that someone has possibly changed them at some point of time.

Is there a rule-of-thumb way to reset the idle mixture to a good setting???

Thanks

try 2 turns out. then adjust in 1/8 turn increments. Give time between adjustments for the fuel/air mix to settle down. It would help to know if the screws are air or fuel, but you should be able to hear when the bike is running decently.

These things are VERY TOUCHY. Go slow and BE GENTLE. It is so unbelievable easy to strip these things out it's not funny. If you feel resistance when you are tightening the screw STOP! it means you've bottomed out. It you strip the bastrd you'll probably be looking for new carbs.
