advice requested- Knoxville TN - Blacksburg VA

possibly going to see my brother next month and i'll be taking the bike. anyone familiar with the space between knoxville TN and Blacksburg VA have any advice on places to stop/things to see on the way? i'll probably just take the interstate both ways, but i'm willing to make side trips if they are worth it.
also. i have a tank bag, and i have a backpack.
do you seasoned travelers recomend spending the money for a tail bag instead of the backpack [free]?
the bike is a kawi ninjette 250.
any other advice for "touring" riding as all i have ever done is rides around town. im nervous about leaving the bike out overnight because i have a garage, he does not.

at least in virgina...dunno spit about knox area roads.
