Motorcycle Air Bag

I'm all for safety, but a motorcycle airbag? Apparently Yamaha, and Honda are experimenting with airbags. How effective do you think that can be in the average motorcycle accident? At best it may help in a low speed front on collision. What's your take on this?

i'll pass.
i'm waiting for inflatable 1pc suits.
so instead of sliding and tumbling, we'll be bouncing around and even if we get hit, we'll just absorb the impact and bounce around some more.

I can't really see how this will work. It may stop a rider from flying forward but then they would retrack backwards. I like the inflatable jacket or suit. Upon being ejected from the bike, the suit will inflate and help soften the impact of landing. I think this is a much better method.

It'll be intresting to see how that works with a passenger in the back...ouch They go foward and you bounce off the bag and go backwards... SMACK!

since most crashes result in the rider parting ways (at least partially) with the bike, i think crash safety must be with the rider, not the bike.

The new Goldwing has an airbag as an option. They were promoting it heavily at their tent in Daytona Bike week.......
I guess anything that slows you down in an impact and stops a rider from shooting over the handlebars has to be a good thing, right?

Seems the biggest problem here is impacting objects around you. So how about an ejector seat that launches you high into the air and then releases a parachute that lets you drift slowly to the ground while you watch the rest of the accident unfold below you.
Assuming you dont wreck in a tunnel that is.

You don't bounce off the bag. They have big holes in them to let the gas out as you hit them. Pushing the gas out takes energy... and any energy spent deflating a gas bag can't then be spent damaging your tender flesh.
Bouncing is bad... bouncing reclaims the energy... which means it will be transfered to you again, over and over again. If you ever have an airbag suit, hope it doesn't bounce....
