Hey, Im new and have no idea where to post this, so dont flame!! SORRY But anyways, I got a 2004 Yamaha R6 and just recently replaced a rear tire for about 2 weeks. Now theres a nail inbetween the tread . Should I just patch it up or should I get another new tire (which kinda dont want to do because I just bought em a couple weeks ago)?. PLEASE HELP, THANKS in advance!!

I'd bite the bullet and get a new tire. If you do let 'em plug it, make sure they remove the tire and do a proper plug from inside.

how much is your life worth?
sounds a bit harsh but i'd place my life as more valuable than the price of a tire.
sure it sucks to have to replace it so soon, but sucks a lot less than a potential accident would.

go into the place that you got your tire from and give them a sob story about the nail, if they value your business they might cut you a deal or give you free mounting/balancing or both.

If a patched tire lets go you'll probably be spending a LOT more to get the fairing and various sticky out bits replaced. So I'd just get a new tire myself, peace of mind and all that.

o yea, is there a difference in the feel of the ride if i purchase a different tire than the front? my front tire is dunlop sportmax and im planning to get dunlop qualifiers for the rear. i would get the same exact tire but i guess dunlop changed the name from sportmax to qualifiers

I grow tired of those who ask the "value your life" question. So many riders have indicated the concern over patching a tire and I have not yet heard nor read about anyone who experienced blowing a patched/plugged tire. I know a guy who patches/plugs motorcycle tires daily and not once has anyone had a problem. BTW, the same thing happend to me when I bought a new tire. I had about 200 miles on it and a nail went in it. I patched it from the inside and it's fine after 10,000 miles. If the hole is straight in, they have plug patches you can use for extra security. If the hole is angled, then just the patch will work.

glad it all works out for you Meanie, and you are probably right that a patch would be fine...but i don't want to be the one in 100,000 that finds out it doesn't work. It is also dependant on what type of patch and who does it.

if i did a "fix-a-flat" patch on the side of the road i wouldn't trust it at all. if a pro in a shop did it from the inside of the tire, i'd probably be okay with it, but knowing there is a patch there would always be a concern to me. also it would depend on where that hole is i think. is it right in the center, on the side where it might only get stressed in the hardest fought turns? for me the couple hundred bucks is worth it.

It's definately worth a word with your local dealer - I had exactly the same thing happen a few months back, took the bike in, expecting top pay for a new tyre...

However, what I didnt know is that the tyres have a 3 month warranty as standard (Avon Azaros) and i had a new tyre fitted for nothing! (well, I gave the guy £10 for doing the work!)

It's always worth an ask....
