Rothliesberger...

#1 Unread post by yoda731 »

Just heard that Ben Rothliesberger was in a motorcycle accident without a helmet. Sigh. If a team is paying you that much $$ (and I am a die-hard Steelers fan), they should require you to wear a helmet in the off-season. I would think that getting his head pounded into the turf during the games would impress upon him how fragile the human body can be!

Here's a LINK to the brief article.

As an obsessive Cowboys fan I have no love for the Steelers, but Rothliesberger is hard not to like. I'm sorry to hear about that.

Any news on how bad it is? It can't be as bad as Kellen Winslow last year...

You might be right about restrictions during the on-season, although I don't know if they apply to motorcycles? I can imagine some guys wanting to ride to practice on a bike, and I don't know if the players' union would OK a ban.

friend of mine back in the day got drafted by the Royals, in his contract it basically said "you can't ride motorcycles, dirt bikes, skydive etc. at any time you are under contract"...this was a number of years ago so who knows if Player's Associations have lobbied against this by now or not.

Thanks, and I agree he has charisma and a great sports-star camera attitude. Seems a good role model, and I'm hoping so much success early on doesn't change that...

No word yet on the severity of the injury, just that he was "alert and conscious."

Thinking about this just made me remember a funny SNL moment. Joe Montana hosted, and in his monologue talked about how much more fun he was having in NY that time, since last time he was there he played in a game and got a concussion, from which he was glad to have made a full recovery. So he continued, talking about where he had visited that week during rehearsals for the show. He said he was having a much better time than his last trip to NY, when he played in a game and got a concussion, from which he was glad to have made a full recovery. He goes on one more time to say what a great time he had in New York that week. Especially after his last visit to NY, when he played in a game and got a concussion, from which he was glad to have made a full recovery...

Think about it for a minute to get the humor...

He seems to think that not wearing a helmet is OK because he only rides in groups and that helps to protect him.

Given that logic, he should not wear a helmet when he plays football because he only plays it in a group and he has a front line to protect him.

As an obsessive Cowboys-hater and Browns fan. I like Rothliesberger, too. Hope he's OK. Kellen never will be.

And further more as a Browns fan I'll ... just ... uh ... shut up now and put my head back in the sand.

The story in MSNBC has him as 'badly hurt in a motorcycle crash Monday and undergoing surgery' but the injuries 'were not life- or career-threatening.'

He had a bunch of sports figures warning him about riding such as Bradshaw and of course his coach, especially without a helmet. Bradshaw was even quoted as saying "Ride it when you retire.”

The story came up over lunch as we watched the Czech Republic score its second goal against the US and of course I was the only rider at the table!

He used the same excuse a lot of riders do for not wearing a helmet..."I’m pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful,” Roethlisberger said at the time. “I’ll just continue to be careful. I told him we don’t ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe.”

Shame.
