Still think helmet laws are bad?

I was watching the news today and came the story of a football quarterback was seriously injured in an accident. He's known for not wearing a helmet when riding but this time maybe the close call will make him think otherwise.

For some reason though the story didn't cover much on the accident itself, just his helmetless issue and the news anchors think that all is needed to prevent injury is just a helmet. I'm for helmet laws but we as a community may get much more than that...':('

Wearing a helmet = GOOD

Laws requiring helmets = BAD

We as motorcyclists should be weary when our government decides to legislate personal safety. Pass all the laws you want regarding the safety of minors, since they rely on others for their well-being. But seatbelt laws and helmet laws are one step closer to motorcycle bans (just ask all the ex 3-wheeler riders out there).

The only reason helmet and seatbelt laws are OK in my book is... if you get into an accident and are in a seatbelt you have a better chance of controlling the car if you are strapped it... not losing control could possibly save you from running someone over or running into another car. The same goes for a helmet, if you are riding down the highway and a rock flies up from a truck and hits your head without a helmet you will probably get hurt enough or knocked out enough to make you crash... which of course could cause someone else to get into an accident when they try to avoid running your mentally challenged butt over. Of course these are just 2 examples, I'm sure you can think of many others.

Hes not saying that hes against helmets, just laws saying you have to wear them.... But in the end, it'll end up like the mcdonalds coffee thing "I didnt know it was hot, they didnt tell me"

Let me edit this for you:

The only reason helmet and seatbelt USAGE are ok.......

Notice the difference? As someone indicated, laws which override our choice to determine our life and safety is something to be concerned about. Wearing these devices is a good thing, no doubt, but telling me I HAVE to wear them is not good.

Mandate laws to protect those who haven't the maturity nor mentality to protect themselves such as children and handicapped people. But mentally sound adults should have the choice with how they want to live their life as long as it doesn't harm another. This applies to assisted suicide as well.

If you're going to wear a helmet anyway, what's wrong with having a law about it?

Here in Canada we have mandatory seatbelt laws and helmet laws.

These laws don't mean anything to me because I don't drive without wearing a seatbelt, nor do I ride without wearing a helmet. I always wore my seatbelt, even before they be required by law. It's going to help save your life in the event of an accident, so it's just common sense to wear them.

in my opinion people who choose not to wear helmets or seatbelts have nothing to lose.
