where is the serial# located?

Where would I find the serial# or VIN# on a 1981 yamaha virago 920?

It should be where the fork is connected to the rest of the bike. In most cases, it is on a paper that is stuck to the frame. Usually if you turn the wheel all the way left you should be able to read the VIN# and other information about the bike.
