The same reason they run in front of cars and trucks, they spook.

This guy was lucky, he didn't stand a chance at avoiding him. If that deer was a little slower, that kid would have some big bruises.

Around here, drivers and riders usually end up losing when it comes to deer...

And that deer by Minnesota standards is small. Up here in the north country, we have moose that stand above 7ft. tall weighing excess of 800lbs. That deer is a bump in the road for around here.

a few questions:

- is the dear dead?
- can the guy keep it?
- would the cost of the carcass be enough to pay for the damage?
- uhhm.... what does it taste like?

Most of the meat would be to bruised to be worth eating after a hit like that.

You have to report an accident with an animal (like that one) to the police. Usually the dead animals just get left in the ditches, but it might be possible to keep it?

Selling the carcass would NOT pay for the repairs.

carcass in most places would be turned over to the local Fish and Wildlife folks.

deer meat tastes good, a bit "gamey" for some folks, but makes great sausage and jerky too :)

Yep. We had a local guy last year that encoutered a deer on his big cruiser. The deer jumped just before the collision and it hit him right in the chest and stripped him off the bike. He ended up with lots of broken bones and internal injuries. Spent almost 2 months in the hospital and had to learn to walk again.

Deer aren't as common out here on western roads. Whenever I visit the northeast, I amazed at the number I see on the roads. Out here, if we see 'em, we eat 'em!
