Other 250 class bikes?

#1 Unread post by black mariah »

I know all about the EX250 and consider it my prime choice at the moment. But what are some other sport-type bikes in this displacement range (new or old, two stroke or four, doesn't matter)? This is more about gaining knowledge than finding potential purchases.

here in the US... nothing much.

but check hyosung. they're starting to export bikes and their 250 sportbike looks good enough.

looks better than the EX250 and is a real sportbike not just sporty looking.

Oh damn, that's nice. Not much more than an EX250 either, apparently.

As an aside I was running around breaking stuff on eBay the other day and ran across those mega-cheap (sub-$1000... wtf?) 200cc bikes. Any word on how long they last before they explode? I can't imagine they'd be good for much other than being insane fun on an empty parking lot.

saw those before... they apparently get 100 mpg. so it's practical for streets. i dunno if those things can handle highway though.

so yeah... go w/ the hyosung comet 250R, check you area if they have it. if you're into sportbikes, you'll enjoy that more than a EX250. it has the aggressive riding position.

hyosung is not new company. but they are new to exporting.

Just to correct verm's post...

If you are into the sportbike riding position you'll enjoy it more. if you are into sport riding, you may enjoy it more. Jury is still out as to which is higher performance (EX250 HP is higher, Hyosung looks like it has a more sophisticated suspension). I can full tuck on my ninja.

The Hyosung is a larger bike... the frame was built to accomodate a 500cc motor. It is probably stiffer as well. That means if you are larger/taller it may be more comfortable... but then again it may not be. Larger riders tend to have an easy time on the EX250 too and it is a rather small bike.

If they had started importing the Hyosung a few months earlier i might/probably would have one. It looks like a really nice choice... but until more people own them here there are going to be unanswered questions about how they really stack up.

Oh, and from what I've heard the chinese ebay bikes can fry early. I was talking to someone who sells them, and his reaction was "chinese bikes are OK for dirt, but you don't want the dual sport or street bikes... want a street bike, buy a honda... want a fun dirt toy, buy one of my bikes."

Ride it like you think owning it matters.

100 MPG? That would be perfect if I was still in Portland, but back here in Freewayland (AKA: The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex) the ability to do 55 and pass at will is mandatory.

I don't see a Hyosung dealer listed in my area, unfortunately. Strange, considering we have practically everything else around here.

that's just what i heard... it's probably too optimistic.

and yes, like i said, hyosung is just starting to expoert bikes here in the US. so it's not surprising that you don't have a dealer in you area.

If you're riding 80kph tops on the highway, you need at LEAST a 125. Well, that's what the laws say here on the books. For 70-80mph, a 250 will do. However, in the States with highways, I think a comfort safe minimum would be a 400cc. At least that's what I've worked out for myself. YMMV

Since I've been out of the States for a bit, I don't know what's available there in the 250cc range. You could look for standards and sports. That might ease the issue of availability.

Good post. I've been wondering the same myself as options have come up recently that make it possible for us to be back in the States within the next few months. I look forward to any other ideas folks come up with.

It actually IS surprising since there's like eight or nine dealerships in Texas already, just none close (closest is 90 miles away in Waco).

I wouldn't buy one of those China specials for roadwork of any kind, really. Now for setting up some cones and carving up the local high school parking lot during the summer... actually... a 50cc pocket bike would be better at 1/4 the price.
