Removing brass plug??

#1 Unread post by sketch »

Hi guys, so I've got two 80 Yamaha xs400's and I'm trying to gain access to the points but am having issues removing the cover. There are two phillips head screws holding down the cover but there is a brass insert or plug that is blocking one of them. My shop manual doesn't say anything about these?!

How do you remove these without damaging the screw beneath?

Thanks!!

you aint got no points.it is electronic ignition.no reason to take that cover off.unless it has quit running or is running lousy and you have checked everything else.anything behind that cover is big money.

To remove the plug, first drill a small hole dead in the middle VERY CAREFULLY so you don't hit the head of the screw beneath it. Then insert a small sheetmetal screw or similar, spray the plug with WD-40, then with pliers, VERY CAREFULLY, pull the plug out. You may have to give it a few good tugs. But you have to be careful or you can crack the cover. Hope that helps. :D

Interesting to know. The shop manual (which covers a couple 300-500cc bikes) says points but you are correct sir. Definitely electronic ignition :) Thanks for your help guys!
