ya so a newbie question but I guess this is the place to ask? I'm going to have to make a note to pay attention to what others wear but do any of you guys ride in just tennis shoes or do most have boots ?? especially those of you who commute

Definitely boots any time I ride but especially for the commute. But then again my work environment is casual ... no clothes snobs or dress codes ... so I don't need to change into tennis shoes when I get to work or anything.

I usually wear shorts, tshirts and a pair of Vans, or some flip-flops, at work. But when I'm on the bike, I'm fully covered in my two-piece riding suit, riding boots, riding gloves and my DOT+SNELL approved helmet. I just carry my shoes or flip-flops in my backpack and change my foot apparel at work.

I wear wolverine durashock boots at all time when riding and my leathers when I can stand the heat.

I wear m/c boots every time I am on the bike.

Tennis shoes offer NO protection in an off. Typically they fly off your feet.

Leather Work Boots offer some abrasion protection but only go up to about mid-ankle. They do not protect against crushing. There's also debate as to whether steel-toe boots do more harm than good in an Off.

Combat boots offer excellent abrasion resistance all the way up the ankle but no crush resistance.

Motorcycle "Cruiser type"/ engineer boots are about the same as combat boots, depending on how far up the ankle they go.

Motorcycle racing boots offer the most amount of protection, including abrasion resistance and prevent your ankle from being crushed.

You must decide what level of risk you are willing to accept and plan appropriately. I wear combat boots, because I have 3 pairs of them from my military service.

i wear "combat" type boots. they are not the best, but FAR better than street shoes.

a rule of thumb is- buy the best gear you can afford. this is your health and safety that you are protecting. and on a much more shallow note- i turn a lot more heads riding in full gear [boots, abrasive resistant pants, JR jacket, full length gloves, and the full face] than when its just helmet-jacket-gloves and i personally liek the looks peopl give when i ride by.

I wear my Sidi boots whenever I go riding now. When I first started riding, I only had my hiking boots and they did go over the ankle. Bad thing with those is that it had a lot of mesh so your feet can breath, but that isn't too good if you crash since the mesh will get tore off quickly. Wear some good boots with thick leather and that won't be a problem.

I wear my Alpine Stars always....even a few miles down the road...took a day to get used to them....but i am confident they would do their job in the event i "pee" my bike off or a cage decides to touch me.
