yamaha xj650 gas problems

I recently acquired a 1982 yamaha xj650j that was deserted for 10 yrs. I just looked at it and charged the battery and i have a couple of questions. It started to turn over, but when it started to, i had gas spraying/dripping out of the exhaust drain holes. there is one in each of the exhausts at the lowest spots. it put out quite a bit of gas. What couldcause this?
also, the fuel petcock has three settings on it. from left to right it reads RES, ON, and PRI. i think that the PRI means prime, and on means on, but what does RES mean and does it actually prime. also, how does it prime if that's what it is. I would appreciate any help you can offer.

on is on, res is reserve, not sure what pri is, all of my bikes were on, off and reserve

you have got a vacuum operated petcock.the prime is to fill the carburetors so it will crank.all prime does is bypass the vacuum seal in the petcock.when the motorcycle sits for any period of time especially in hot weather the gas will evaporate out of the float bowls.

thank you, i left it on prime too much apparently and flooded the carbs and everything. the extra gas just ran out of the exhaust. thanks for the help

still wont start

do you have any suggestions now?
if i put ether in just one of the spark plug holes, it purrs like a kitten, but the second it runs out of ether it dies. It's not getting gas for some reason. I put it on prime for 2-3 seconds, but it doesn't do it on that either. I don't get why it won't start. Will poutting an air filter on increase the vacuum by enough to pull the gas into the engine? i don't know what's going on.

It is more likely in the fuel delivery. Clean the fuel tank and the carbs and the bike will very likely run fine. It is alot of work but that is what it is going to take for it to run right.

If it sat for 10 yrs. with gas in it, it's likely that the carbs are a horrible gunked up mess. You probably aren't going to get it running until you at least pull the carbs, tear them down and give them a good cleaning.
That's the standard "first step" when bringing a bike back to life.
