My coworker's car got sandwitched between 2 SUVs this morning. He is ok, but the car is probably totalled. Suddenly lane splitting doesn't look so dangerous any more.

Yeah, might want to explain the situation in more detail...that makes it sound like he was lane splitting in his car and got sandwiched.

he got rammed from behind and ended up hitting the car in front. He sent us a picture of the accident. Both the rear and the front of his car are mangled. I shudder to think what that would be like on a bike. That's why I said lane splitting looks like a safer alternative.

Same thing happened to my wife a few months back...at 60mph no less. In a situation like that, I would definetly be keeping my eye on a shoulder or an escape route.

Yeah I keep an eye on the mirrors because of stories like that. Also I tend to hug the side of the lane I'm in that will give me access to escape. I used to stop in the center of the lane, but read something about being rear ended and needing an escape route so I've changed my habits

We call it filtering in the UK.. I'm just getting my confidence up with this, especially now i have a bike that can comfortably leave the cars at the lights  A rule of thumb I use is that if the cars are moving at more than about 15mph I don't do it, and I don't go any faster than about 10mph more than the cars are..
