What do you guys think of the M50
Dealer is giving me a good deal on the M50. I like the look and the fact that its fuel injected but the weight of it is worrying me a little.
It felt very comfortable to me. The S50 was lighter but felt less comfortable and no injection.
Let me know. I trust you guys (most of you anyway)

M50 is my very first bike ever (that hasn't been labeled a Murray or Huffy...). I'm 5'11", 185 lbs. and LOVE the bike! I spent a lot of time between this one and the VStar 650 Custom, but ended up getting the M50. The lines of the bike from the headlight to the tail is what helped me decide.
Make sure you're comfortable with the weight (in the showroom, lean it from left to right and see how the weight feels). I have nothing but good things to say about the bike.
Here's a link to my review of my bike... Enjoy!

That was actually my primary choice when looking at buying a new bike as my first. I too at first looked at the Vstar 650 custom, but then decided on the M50. I like the styling on the M50 better and I heard that the 650 Custom was a dog on the highway. I figured the bigger engine would make up for the highway performance and fuel injection would have made my life easier.

I took a "group ride" a few weeks ago with people on Harley's and two Yamahas. I was right in the middle of the pack. I'm still sort of "breaking it in", so I've not gone too hard on it. During the group ride, they all SHOT off from stop signs. I had never really "rocketed" mine that way before, but I gave it a shot. Good thing I was holding on! I was really surprised at how quickly that puppy got going!
Going around corners is really nice and smooth, too. Let off the throttle a bit, when you reach the apex roll on the throttle. Not only does it go smoothly, but the exhaust note that it gives is GREAT during the curve.
The "low gas" light comes on with like 3/4 gallon left or something, I believe. There is NOT a reserve tank, that I'm aware of. I've not let it go compeltely dry yet...and don't intend to.
The looks were the main thing (I know...sounds fickle...
) that drew me to this one. Let's just say, though...if Suzuki (or any other brand) would've had a 250cc bike that looked like the M109r, I would've gotten that instead. I didn't buy the M50 just because it was the bigger of the two I was looking at. It just really "called" to me.
Fuel Injection is really nice on cool mornings.

No reserve tank in FI vehicles.
I like the styling of the M50. I haven't ridden one, but I have heard good things.

Stupid "newbie" question, but...the reason for no reserve tank, is it due to the fuel pump? A reserver would be nice, but FI, I think, is nicer...unless you think about the fact it's one more thing that can break. No reserve tank in FI vehicles.

Unless you're planning on doing a lot of exhaust mods, there's relatively few differences between FI and Carbs. So that shouldn't really be a selling issue.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

I guess it's just a "mind over matter" thing with me.
During my MSF class, I kept forgetting to close the choke after getting the bike started for the day, and it would be sitting there revving high. The instructor would give me a look, point to the engine and make a "turn down" signal with his hand. Needless to say, at the end of the class, the comment was made, "when you first came in, we weren't sure you were going to make it through the class. You ended up being one of the top ones here...mainly because you listened to what we had to say and took those things with you..."
Anyway, the thought of FI just calmed a few extra little nerves of mine. I know it's not a big deal unless you're doing mods and such (which I'm not), but for some reason, I just feel more "at ease" with it. And when I talked with my cousin, who's bike doesn't have it, he said, "that's got to be nice. Especially when you want to ride and it's still cold outside! You don't have to wait as long for it to warm up and get going!"
It's just me, though, so you can take it with a grain of salt.

That being said, to the original poster, the M50 is on my short list of bikes that I'm looking at when I decided to get a new one. So is the C50 and Vulcan 900.
I don't think it's fickle at all. Looks are the first thing we notice about something. Why would you buy a motorcycle that doesn't look good to you? I wouldn't. Obviously there are other things to consider, but I can't imagine buying a bike that meets most of my needs but is butt ugly to me.brbolin wrote: The looks were the main thing (I know...sounds fickle...) that drew me to this one.

A dog had his chain reduced one link at a time, every few days, until his chain was so short he could barely move. He never resisted because he was conditioned to the loss of his freedom slowly, over time. Are we in this country becoming like the dog?
