Hesitation at 2k.

Good news first. After a month and a half of tinkering and cleaning, I got my bargain basement Virago running. It was a happy night.
On to my question. I can get the bike to start and idle fine, but when I slowly build rpms it starts to hesitate and sputter at 2000. If I can get over the 2k mark, it's fine and can throttle up and down quite nicely, but sometimes it drops out and stalls. Could it just be a few more of the cobwebs in the system and improve the more it runs? It's been sitting for about 4 years I think, and it did seem to be starting to run a little better near the end of my playing around last night. Maybe I didn't seat the carbs entirely right?
The bike is an 83 Virago xv750.
