Don't laugh: How do you get it up?

Seriously...

I live on a sandy, dirt road and have had multiple occasions where I've dropped my bike. Every time I've been travelling less than 5 mph. That's probably my problem - I ride too slowly. Anyway, that's not my question.

I'm wondering what you think is the best way to lift the bike back up once it has laid down. I ride a Virago. It's a bit over 500lbs. I have been able to do it myself so far, but man, it's a pain. Last time I did it, I grabbed the seat and pulled it clean off. Oops.

I've heard crazy things, like turn your back to it and lift, but that just seems weird. Any experience with this?

Thanks, Janet

a lot of cussing usually helped me. But anywho, use your legs to lift, and not your back, 500 lbs is enough to slip a disc and all that jaz. Although my experiance is limited to 200 pound dirtbikes, all i can say is leave it in gear so the rear wheel doesn't roll on you. if you're under the bike when it falls, first thing, HIT THE KILL SWITCH.

this site has some cool videos. If this lady can pick up this bike, you can pick up yours.

Thanks a ton for those really useful links. I really appreciate being able to see this technique performed, not just hearing it described. Thank you!

Ha! I got Verm's attention!

Just don't fall over the bike when you get it standing up...

Seems the consensus is the bassackwards method. Great, hopefully I'll never have to try it, but good to know...

Thanks to all for the input.
