Don't laugh: How do you get it up?

Seriously...
I live on a sandy, dirt road and have had multiple occasions where I've dropped my bike. Every time I've been travelling less than 5 mph. That's probably my problem - I ride too slowly. Anyway, that's not my question.
I'm wondering what you think is the best way to lift the bike back up once it has laid down. I ride a Virago. It's a bit over 500lbs. I have been able to do it myself so far, but man, it's a pain. Last time I did it, I grabbed the seat and pulled it clean off. Oops.
I've heard crazy things, like turn your back to it and lift, but that just seems weird. Any experience with this?
Thanks, Janet
