I did it. 82 XJ650 Seca.

I've heard many good things about these bikes, and this one seems to be in decent shape. Fit was right, and the price was right... so I did it. Officially take possession on Moday but I'm pretty excited

All you XJ owners out there, anyone not satisfied? Comments, advice from those with actual experience?

I bought an 82 XJ650 Maxim 2 weeks ago. I take the MSF course next month so I haven't ridden it yet, just changing fluids and polishing it up. I can say that every person I've talked to says great things about the XJ650s.

My current ride is an '82 Seca that i did a "practical restoration" on. (got it running and safe for the street )

Engine's good, but the first thing I did was put pod air filters on and tweak the jetting. Didn't do this for more power - did it because ... well, you'll see the first time you try to take the carbs off.

Bridgestone Spitfire s11's are great tires for this bike....

Fusebox is a weak spot on this bike ... the terminals for the fuses are weak and break if you aren't careful.

In Quebec we have very strange laws. Once we pass the written exam, take the course (which is a total of 22 hours!) then pass the closed track exam, THEN we have to wait 7 months before being allowed to take the road exam.

Why the 7 months you ask? We have this crazy law that says that within those 7 months we have to ride with an experienced rider... which I'll admit isn't that bad a concept. So with an experienced rider I can follow him on my bike and ride a few hundred feet behind them.

Problem with this is the Canadian winter is 5-6 months anyway, so can you guess what most people do?

So... after that lengthy explanation (I really do apologize ) Monday morning I get to follow this guy to the licence place and then he'll accompany me to my place. Lucky for me, he's not too far from me and decided a Goldwing was more his style

So to answer the question, Monday there will be pics... oh yes, there will be many many pics!

is it the XJ650RK, also known as the Turbo Seca? If so, have fun, but be hanging on when you spin up the turbo!

Way to go. Im glad you ahve gotten your first bike. I think they are great bikes. I rode on from Canada to Costa Rica, it was great. very few problems. Great bike to learn on riding and the basic mechanics of the bike are not too bad either. Hope you have some great ride on it. Get a manual for it.

Bought an 82 xj650 maxim last July, and put about 2500 miles on it since then. All good so far... no problems or complaints. This is really a standard bike with a cruser "styling" applied, and not much different functionally from your Seca.

I haven't ridden a lot of different bikes, but I can tell you it is much different than those you'll ride in the MSF course as you might expect. I went right from the class to the xj650. The power and feel take some getting used to, but I survived the transition with no drops or problems. Some I talked to felt it wasn't the ideal first bike, but it worked for me. It has enough power that I don't feel the need to go to something bigger just yet, and don't expect to for some time.

Now, I have to do some maintenance and figure out how things work. Just yesterday I couldn't even manage to get the seat up How sad is that?

Oil change, air filter, probably change plugs too. Oh yeah, I should check the carbs too (but I've heard this is a PITA). So many things to do, so little time!
