Just curious if anybody here was a geek too and working with Beta 2 of Windows Vista. What are your opinions of it?
I personall am growing to like it little by little. I tested one of the first betas last year and it was the worst OS I had ever used. Now however, it seems that after 40 years in the making

, Vista seems to be coming around.

I will wait a year or so before I switch from XP to any new OS. They don't have a very good record of producing first-gen software without major problems.

I spent some time playing with Beta 2 when it came out a few weeks back. It's OK. Nothing revolutionary, it's still nowhere near as pretty as OS X, but I do think they have a *ton* of work to do to get the security features down to a level where they're actually useful. The way it is now, you get tons of cryptic alerts that 99% of users can't begin to understand, so they will simply get in the habit of clicking OK for everything.

Were testing it and so far the feedback has been that it's complicated and slow. Seems to not like our current version of McAfee.

Yeah it is pretty bloated right now. It's much better than Beta 1 so that tells me they are cleaning up the code still. One MAJOR annoyance is with their damn security dialogs when accessing Control Panel or just doing anything somewhat administrative. Luckily though, Microsoft will be removing that by the final release.

I'm testing it at work and using it at home... it's pretty cool I guess... still has a long way to go though IMO.

Now that they removed all new features except eye candy, are they going to rename it XP service pack 3? Nah... that wouldn't sell...

Yeah, I'm dual booting it and XP pro on my home PC right now, and I use it at work quite a bit on a spare machine (working in a PC repair shop means we have a lot of spare machines) for fun.
It's pretty sweet as far as graphics go, the added security is nice, and it's got some nice features to it (like stackable files).

It's slow if you're running it on less then a gig of RAM, and if your video card is less then 128mb, higher then that, and it runs pretty fast. And yeah, alot of programs don't like it, but you can always go to the options for a program, and have it run in XP compatibility mode. Of course, McAfee sucks, so I don't know why you're using it anyway, but hey, it comes free with dells, lol.
