Purpose of Ads and pop-ups on Total Motorcycle?
I am just curious, with all of the support from the members of this site, why is there still a need for pop-ups and ads? Is this someone's full time job to monitor?

yes, mike's. (totalmotorcycle) there's a thread in the soapbox, or suggestion box about this (too lazy to look it up)earwig wrote:I am just curious, with all of the support from the members of this site, why is there still a need for pop-ups and ads? Is this someone's full time job to monitor?

Having talked to Mike personally about it, I don't envy him his job. It's a ton of work, so if it means I need to stare at a couple of ads once a day when I login I'm not going to complain about it.
What I WOULD complain about is people who make new threads to ask the same old questions.
Oh and if you really wanted to do the math. Cheap hosting (remember we have 500000 a hits a day) is something like $20-30 a month. And TMW is not cheap hosting (needs to be high bandwidth and VERY reliable with great customer support). So that requires that one new person become a site supporter EVERY month. It doesn't seem that big a deal, though I have to say that personally it took me 3 years to become a site supporter.
So under the assumption that we're probably paying a couple hundred a month to keep the site up and running, that means we need quite a few people donating every month in order to keep the site up. This is unprobable and unlikely in the extreme. Aside from that, it's not a steady cash flow. He might get 4 people to become gold support one month and 0 for the next 3 months.
Ads provide a constant, reliable income (with supplementar donations) to keep the site that we've come to know and love up and running.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

First of all... I have been on this site for a while and never saw a thread asking this question so bite me. Second... since I am a gold supporter, paid to support this site and plan on renewing next year I feel that I can post whatever the heck I want as long as it doesn't break any rules. Simply directing me to a thread that explains what you tried to explain would have been fine. Should I whine and complain everytime a thread is repeated?Sevulturus wrote:What I WOULD complain about is people who make new threads to ask the same old questions.

Yes. It is our job as posters to complain every time a topic is brought up more than once. We are to continuall bump the same 400 page threads every time we want to talk about something.earwig wrote:First of all... At least, that's the way some people seem to imagine it working...

Or, don't bump them at all? Simply read them and keep going.black mariah wrote:Yes. It is our job as posters to complain every time a topic is brought up more than once. What's your fav/least fav form of advertising?
There's lots more, but everything is answered there.
Sorry if I stepped on your toes earwig. I hadn't thought you'd pick that one thing to get stuck on, especially since I wasn't refering to you specifically. But you're right, your $25 a year does give you the option to post whatever you want.

That's it exactly.black mariah wrote:So what you're saying is... lock all the threads and just keep an archive up. 'Cause there ain't a damn thing that hasn't been discussed before.Sevulturus wrote:Or, don't bump them at all? Simply read them and keep going.
