83 Kawaski 550 LTD Oil check Information

My friend just purchased a 83 Kawaski 550 LTD and would like to know what type of oil he should put in it. Also, how to check for the right amount of oil. When we remove the cap, there is a little curved piece right below the initial filler neck, should the oil be visible up to that point?

Find yourself a manual dude. It will detail all that info for you. Sorry can't be of more help.

Or ask your dealership as they have a database of the oil weight info.
