I am thinking about picking up a 86' Yamaha FZ600. Are there any common problems with this bike that i should know about?

1st- Check if the carbs are leeking any fuel. If so you have a oring in your carbs that's leeking. 30¢ repair but if you don't know it you can search for long.

What I can say is that mine is not 100% reliable, I have a intermittent problem that I can't fix and it drives me nut... but still maybee it's juste mine.

Avoid fast shifts, clutchless, high RPM, dragracer-type shifts or sloppy shifts from 1st to 2nd. They will round off the engagemeant dogs of those gears as well as bend the shiftfork (which is what actually eats up the gear dogs). This will make the bike jump out of second gear when power is applied. If the bike already jumps out of 2nd, someone else has already done this for you, and things will only progess toward a tear down. How long until that's needed depends how bad it is and how carefully you make that shift now. If it doesn't do it yet, careful, let's say 'acurate', shifts will prevent it.

Many Yamaha trannys from the early/mid 80's to the mid 90's were the same basic unit and they all have this weakness. Your's is one of them.

This bike has "soft" valves. If the valves were not adjusted at the correct interval, there is a good chance that you will have problems down the line.
