What does the advanced MSF teach that the BRC did not? Is it worth the money?

hawkster, the runner of the skillzday i attend each month, tried the free ERC the MSF offered last month.
he said it's good but he woudn't pay money for it. besides, he said since he's running the skillzday... we could just attend his skillzday since it's basically the same minus the obstacle part but i heard he's gonna include an obstacle drill in the next skillzday.
so yeah, if you don't have any other means of getting that training... then by all means pay for it.
it's basically the same as the BRC but you use your own bike.
but if your bike isn't that much different than the BRC bikes, then you should just practice everything they taught you at the BRC by yourself.

Heh...my bike IS the BRC bike.
What kind of skills did the ERC teach your friend?

it's basically the same as the BRC. at least accdg to the people i spoke too about it.
but since you're using our own bike (which most of the time is bigger and badder than the BRC bikes), it makes a lot of difference.
so, in your case, i don't think it's gonna be worth it unless you feel like you wanna get some personal instructions. if i were you, i'd just practice the BRC stuff on a parking lot.

Around here the advanced MSF involves street skills. Things like recognizing what cars are going to do, avoiding accidents, communicating with other riders and other vehicles. How to take certain types of corners etc etc. Lots of group riding stuff too.
Ask Karatechick she took it. I got the free version from my Aunt n Uncle's riding club (The Retreads).

I don't think it's very expensive. $50 maybe?

it depends, some states have it for free...
over here it's $200+ for 21yo and older. $100+ below if 21yo.

Yeah in VA it is $75 for the ERC, compared to $135 for the BRC. I'll take the ERC next year. I've already logged a few thousand miles on my bike, and I've only been riding since April.

I was thinking about the Rider's Edge course...or the state one, but I hear their waiting lists are very long. Its about $150...affordable, but I'm wondering if anyone has any personal experience with it.

I took one called Street Skills with the Safety Council. It had us riding our own bikes in low, medium and high density traffic, riding weird surfaces (cattle bridges, wet painted lines, extreme bumpy roads, gravel & mud...etc), challenging areas (steep hills for starting/stops/parking, metal bridges, wet leaves, etc) group riding, highway riding, passenger riding, slow speed figure 8 with 14 bikes all at once (scary).
There is an ERC course for people with over 5,000 km that reviews the BRC quickly with your own bike then gets into collision avoidance, urban riding tactics, advanced turning and braking. I've been told you work on things like major leaning and swerving with your own bike and braking and they create wet surfaces and such for practice. It is supposed to allow you to learn what your bike can do in circumstances.
