Harley.... dinette set.. Harley... dinette set..

Anyone remember this commercial?

A guy is pumping gas into his minivan. A slightly younger guy pulls into the gas station on his Harley and starts filling it up. The minivan guy starts chatting biker guy up, explaining that he almost got one.. but his wife wanted a dinette set. "Harley, dinette set, Harley, dinette set.. I went with the dinette set."

When I was thinking about buying my bike, this commercial kept popping into my head. I kept saying "what if I don't get a bike? Will I be that guy in the minivan in 20 years who spent the money on something stupid instead?"

This thought, more than any other, is what made me go ahead and buy the bike.

Anyone else go through something like this?

i don't remember that commercial but i do know that the only remorse i had was that i no longer had that money set aside, but the big face splitting grin of riding down the road took care of that.

if i hadn't bought the bike, the money probably would have gone to build a fence (put it off a couple years but finally got that fence) which is not as much fun to ride as my bike is.

I think deep down I always wanted a motorcycle, I was just a bit aprehensive about the safety of it. After I rode around on a scooter for a few days on vacation I was hooked. I did the BRC and it taught me a lot of skills as well as safety strategies and I feel a lot more confident on the bike, than I did on that scooter.

I only spent $1850 for my bike, and it is money well spent. After factorying the BRC, Insuarance for the year, DMV fees, and safety gear I'm at around $3k. I commute with the bike and it allows me to take the HOV lanes which saves me time and money.

My wife and I both work full time and have the same salary. If she wants a dinette set, she can buy it. I chose the motorcycle and don't regret it.

Actually for us it was new carpet and hard wood floor for the house. Needless to say, that hasn't happened yet.

Harley or dinette set? Tough call. Let's say we make the choice a bit easier by choosing between a Harley or a couch. The couch is less expensive, more comfortable, more reliable, and just as fast as a Harley. I'll take the couch.

I've got an idea.

Let's turn my thread about what made me decide to buy a bike, and my sincere question about what made other people decide to buy a bike, and turn it into a Harley flame fest simply because it's easy to bash Harleys.

Clearly you are an idea man.
