I always start with price. I set myself a maxium I will spend and look around accordingly.
Then style. Looks are important because I am going to wear the thing every day for the next few years.
Finally, fit. If it is a good price and looks super it means absolutely nothing if it is not comfortable.

Some say fit first, but if it is a $1300 helmet and as ugly as a hat full of arseholes I am not going to buy it.

I think fit is the most important thing - I went helmet shopping last week and tried on every helmet in the shop. it came down to Shoei and HJC as the two that fit best. after a bit or research I found that there is not much difference in impact protection between various DOT/SNELL aproved helmets, so I bought the HJC and saved about $400

just go around and try em on and see what fits best.

I went to a specialty bike shop first, and they only sold Arai (which are like $400-650) and the lady said theyre the best so its the only thing they sell. shes all talking about how great they are, and theyre fiberglass, and motogp wear them, and they fit perfectly blah blah blah. even with a bunch of stupid inserts she still couldnt get it to fit comfortably. then i went to a dealer, and the first HJC i tryed on fit perfectly, so i bought that for $120.

I found an Icon Alliance Primary that fit perfect and it cost $100 bucks. A good fit is the main thing though.

Tried on every helmet I could find and the only ones that I would consider wearing for comfort were the Scorpion EXO 400 and HJC Cl12.

The problem with the Scorpion is that it is very loud with wind noise but comfort is critical.

Remember the old days of having my helmet literally feel like it was eating into my skull after an hour or so of riding. Had to stop and take a break because of the pain. Now I just ride and ride no issues.

Get what feels most comfortable.

I had worn HJC in the past but after my 6 years of not riding, my old helmet didn't fit so snug.

I ran up to a Honda dealer here and tried on some helmets. Settled on a Medium sized HJC, left the helmet in the shop. I then jumped on eBay and got the helmet for $10 cheaper than the dealer was asking for it (thats after shipping costs btw). I can wait a few days for a few dollars saved. My helmet is in my sig pic below.

I would rather spend the extra 10 bucks and keep my local dealer in business.

I buy local because the dealer allowed me try the helmet on answered the questions I asked. That's a service and they earned my business.

Try on different helmets. Different manufacturers have different shaped innards so some may fit you better than others. Even though you have your heart set on a specific model, I'd buy the one that fits better.

Er - just curious but what Shoei were you looking at that you saved $400? My RS-1000 didn't even cost that.
