Just exactly how bad is it for a bike to be at full throttle for extended periods? For example a bike with a top speed of 80 doing 75 for three hours? note: I don't intend to do this any time soon. I was planning to ride a 250 from mpls to duluth, and while I will mostly be using backroads, there will be a number of times when I won't be able to avoid 75mph freeway stretches. Should I just skip it and ride, or simply try to limit my freeway exposure?

Hi Scott -
I'm from Duluth. Are you planning on taking Hwy. 35 up? There are tons of nice back roads on from the cities to Duluth. I ride the back roads to Rush City all the time. It's quite entertaining to see horses on public roads.
Anyways, I'd suggest as much back roads as possible on a 250. The fatigue factor is pretty high when you're pressing that much wind with such a light bike at 75+. Also, what 250 are you riding? Not all 250s are the same as some are geared taller for hwy. riding.

if you are that concerned then you could just put a smaller sprocket on the rear and that would drop your rpm down

Does the bike in question have a rev counter?
If it does then the redline will be marked on it, spenmd too much time north of that and it'll go pop sooner or later.
That said I pin the throttle of the CX open on a regular basis putting it about 500 short of the redline
My little CG didnt have a rev counter but it would do 65-70mph pined open, which isnt too bad for a 125.

All of the 250cc cruisers top out around 80mph.
The ninja is sporting the best 250 engine...

Level ground no wind?
I'd bet I could get a picture of my ninja250's speedo pointing at 130 if I wanted to. There's this one long hill... drops about 2000' of altitude over 5 miles or so... in a car you can go 70+MPH in neutral.... I bet if I picked a low wind day (wind normaly blows up the hill) and maybe swapped sprockets again I could really get some speed going down that hill if I wanted.
Of course, 130 on the ninjette speedo is probably 115 real world.
