Looking for advice on what would be a good first ride?
Hey everyone, I am a big fan of CBR 600's but i dont want to kill my self learning to ride.
Could some one suggest a good first ride by honda. (yes i am a honda fan, i am aussie and loved watching Mick Doohan race)
I like the look of a sports bike, was considering a sports 250 but a few comments have me wondering if they are too powerful for a begginer. If possible i would like to find a bike suitable for a beginner, that has the sports "look".
The Bad Boy look does not appeal to me at all, I would just like to learn on something that is suited to my developing abilities and sense of style.
I dont want to go fast i just wish to look smart.
Safe Riding To all, Brian. Go Doohan

not sure what is available in Australia, but there might be the 250 cbr bike there which would be closer to the style you want and a more reasonable CC size.
i'm big on Honda myself, but bought a Kawasaki ninja 250 for my fiancee to learn on simply because it's one of the best bikes to learn to ride on.
you probably wouldn't kill yourself on a 600RR, but any errors you do make would be multiplied over the same error on a smaller bike like the ninja 250 or gs500 or something of that nature.
take a basic rider's course in your area and then decide on a bike based on what you like.
another bike to consider would be the 250 nighthawk...not super sporty looking, but a nice big tank, decent fuel milage and a honda.
EDIT:
just checked the Aus site and saw..this

i am 5'8" 210lbs and for me all 250's except the kawasaki ninja were to small to me. I like my honda shadow deluxe at only 600 cc. I have made mistakes but this bike is very forgiving and has allowed me to be accident free thus farbok wrote:not sure what is available in Australia, but there might be the 250 cbr bike there which would be closer to the style you want and a more reasonable CC size.

now I know you don't seem to want to include cruisers in your plans since that's not your style (which is fine) but if you want a fairly tame honda cruiser, the Shadow Spirit 750 is a nice ride too (i'm biased)

You'll need to bug the other Austrailian riders but generally Australia seems to restrict to 250cc's in your probationary period. Check out the licencing;

Honda wise the VTR-250 is damned sexy beast. The CBF250 is the ultimate expression of the dream/superdream and the CB250 seems to be a nighthawk. None of them will disgrace you while you are qualifying for the Bigger bikes.
The CBR125RR and CBR250RR might be available as imports if nothing else.

Thats the joy of ergonomics though, I was comfortably riding a smaller displacement bike and I am a lot taller than yourself.ofblong wrote:i am 5'8" 210lbs and for me all 250's except the kawasaki ninja were to small to me.
