I am looking to sell my 1981 Yamaha 400cc with 17469 miles on it. I only paid $300 for it, but I fixed it up and it run very well now. I was thinking of starting it at $1,500-$2,000. What is a good starting price?

Fifty Bucks! :D

Just kidding.

Personally, I'd never pay that much for such an old bike. At that stage, you often wind up fixing the things that you or someone else already fixed numerous times. You're much more likely to run into lots of loose metal in the engine, there's wear on the rings & seals etc. Plus, most bikes that old are a beyatch to get parts for.

Having said that, there are some who live for those old bikes.

The market will dictate your price, bro. I used to have an old 82 Seca 650 with 33000 on it. I had fixed it up great -- it was painted, spent a mint on parts and had her running great. Listed at 2000 obo -- not one call. Listed it at 1500 -- not one call. Listed at 1000 -- lots of calls and wound up letting it go for 800. That was back in 1997. If I had done that now with the same 82 model; I dunno if I'd get that much. Probably; there's a lot of people that pay for those; though I don't know why. ..

If you're talking about an XS400 (parallel twin street bike), and it's really in good running (and looking) condition, you could start it at $1,000 and see if anyone bites. I guarantee you'll get no takers at $2,000 unless you happen across some crazy noob with too much money in his pocket (they're out there, but they're hard to find).

I sold an 81 xs 400 in great mechanical shape and with nearly mint paint on it for $750. Couldn't get anyone to bite at higher prices.
