Proper way to come to a complete STOP

Lately I have noticed that I am not coming to a stop properly. What I'm doing wrong is that I pull the clutch in apply the front break and back break but find myself for example in 4th gear at the stop. During the stop I contiue to shift all the way to first. Is this proper or improper? Or should I pull in the clutch in shifting all the way to first while coming to a stop without ever realeasing the clutch or should I shift down one gear at a time to a complete stop? Or does it really matter?

to me it depends on distance and speed.

if i have enough distance and not too much speed... i blip on each downshift.

if i don't have enough... i just brake then once i slow enough, i pull in the clutch then shift all the way to 1st.

You should take the MSF class ;)

I did take the msf class but dont remember them mentioning it. So if I understand correctly with the responses I got, its not ok to shift from say 4th gear to first while at a stop, is that improper? Bad for the bike?

some bikes (like mine) wont allow you and/or will be very very very hard to get into first from 4rth when you are not moving. I downshift when I get close to having to stop all the way to first and coast for a bit and then apply the breaks. For me I like to make my brakes last as long as I can :D.

Sometimes I'll have one of those OH-"CRUMB" emergency moments where I have to stop short, and I don't think to shift down (or I don't make it down all the gears). So there I am, clutch held in, and in 3rd or 4th gear. Bikes don't like to downshift while stopped. What I tend to do in that situation (to prevent the bike from stalling) is shift down one gear at a time, and let the clutch out half-way each time until I hear the gear catch. It takes a bit of monkeying around but at least it's better than stalling all over the place. If you can help it, you should be in 1st by the time you are completely stopped.

You took the BRC and they didn't mention downshifting during a stop? I wonder what else they didn't tell you...

Its not bad for you bike to shift while stopped, its just more difficult. Once I start braking, I downshift through the gears to match engine speed....so once I'm pulling up to a stop, I'm back down to first. There are cases where I'm stopping quicker than I'd like to downshift, so, I just skip a gear or two. You want to be in 1st one you put your foot down though incase some cager comign up on your "O Ring" doesnt see you, you'll be able to bolt outta the way fast.
