Riders that make us all look bad

While driving on I-270 (Columbus, Ohio loop road around the city) last night I was passed by three sport bike riders. I was doing 65 MPH and they had to have been going between 90 & 100 MPH. I was in the center lane of three lanes. One bike passed my on each side at the same time; the third bike was just a second or two behind. It's true that it was a clear summer night, but it was 10:30PM on what is essentially a country road. The road circles the city but frequently passes through rural areas where all sorts of night critters are likely to be found in the middle of the road. The first two bikes passed us so quickly that both my wife and I were taken by surprise, and of course you can imagine my wife's reaction. She already doesn't like motorcycles and guys who ride like these three make it hard on the rest of us.

A couple of years back I was driving on I-80 south of Chicago at night and was passed by two bikes. I was doing 70 MPH and I have no idea how fast these guys were going. They must have been going well over 100, because they went past so quickly that I couldn't even identify what type of bikes they were on. I suspect they must of have been sport bikes, but I really couldn't tell. At those speeds any little problem will spell disaster for the rider, especially at night when they must be overdriving their headlights. I wonder if there are any statistics that compare the number of fatal accidents on sport bikes with those on other style bikes. Don't get me wrong; I'm not against sport bikes, just against riders who make all of us look bad.

I can understand where you're coming from. I don't like irresponsible drivers, regardless of what they're driving. As for whether sport bike owners are higher risks, that's very feasible, considering sport bikes usually cost more to insure (insurance companies must be on to something, eh? ).

That carries over to sports cars and so on and so forth. Why? Well, I like to think a pivotal reason for this is that "sportier" vehicles innately appeal to a younger demographic, and us young folk like to go fast! And we feel invincible  (why some kids on gixxers wear shorts, t-shirt, and k-swiss?) Haha, personally, that cracks me up the most. Tells you the kid hasn't fallen off his bike yet.

I'm not against sport bikes at all though, just stupid drivers. That's why I also laugh at those times when I see a dude on a monster cruiser wearing a tank top and a "brain-bucket" style helmet (if any at all). Some people just never learn :|

Yeah, these people should be take outta the gene pool. But it irks me when bikers do good things and it never gets mentioned.

I agree that sportbike riders tend to be pretty fast on the highway but nothing compares to the scare I got. Some tuner car and a Corvette are driving pretty fast and get stuck behind drivers doing the limit and stuck really close to their bumpers. All of a sudden I had the Corvette behind me on my "O Ring" as if he was expecting me to go sporty fast and the tuner car cutting me off so imagine if I had to brake hard. All in the right lane doing 75 mph while these guys were doing 100 - 110 when they passed me after I sped up to 94 mph to get distance. Right lanes suck and so does the non-riding public.

I hate it when people focus on us since we are not the norm.

Probably simply because there are more of them on the road, I see more riceburners weaving around and racing on the freeways than I see bikes. I see sportbikes violating the speed limit all the time, but at least mostly they are just in the left lane in mild traffic.

i always see shitty civics and the cheap mustangs driving far out of the realm of what is considered reasonable for the road (and their skill) while amazing 100grand sportscars and mustang GTs that could smoke the crap out of anything else on the road do the speed limit.

I agree, it's riders like that who make it tough on the rest of us. I was getting on the expressway here when a sport bike pulled the wheel right beside me and continued on down the expressway with the wheel up and weaving in and out of traffic. He was really putting on a show, but what he didn't realize was that his actions were distracting the cage drivers, and there were brake lights going on everywhere. Everyone was watching to see if he was going to splat right there in front of them. I know he was well over the ton, because I was going nearly 70. I hope they didn't think that because we got on the expressway together, we were riding partners.
