I just completed the MSF course today so I am ready to get a bike now. (Of course, after I go to the DPS and get the endorsement) I am almost positive that I will be getting a 2006 Yamaha V Star Custom 650. Does anyone have experience with this bike, or have any advice about it? I almost want the 1100, but I don't really want to part with an extra $2,000...... I think the 650 will be big enough, at least to start with. I am about 5'10" and 250 lbs.

Thanks for the advice.

Good job on starting small. You will not regret it. The 650 will be just fine. They have quite abit of torque.

 My, my, my. A 650 cc bike considered "small"? I remember a time a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away when a 750 was a "big" bike. That time and galaxy? The 70's. :)

Guess I'm showing my age, huh?

I have the Yamaha Virago 535, which is the precursor to the V-Star 650. Plenty of power. With a passenger, opening the throttle at 65 on the interstate yanks me right up to 70-75.

You'll love it.

got my M Class back in Sept of 2005, purchased a Honda NIghhawk 650 for my 1st MC and loved it- 675 miles later, sold it and am aiming for the V Star 650 Classic or Silverado.
I am 220 lbs, 5'9 (5'10 when i am sporting the old School Pompadour).
Sat on the MC and it felt pretty good. Handlbars are in a nice position, though i really like to stretch my arms out a little more.
Found a local V Star owners here in the Chicago Burbs that will let me ride her MC to get a feel, so i'll let you know how it pulls me along, but i've heard nothing but good stuff on the V Star!

The Yamaha V Star 650 is the best entry level, beginners bike you can buy, it has plenty of engine power for any speed limit, its a bullet proof reliable engine that sounds good, its comfortable and very easy to ride, handles like a dream. I have a friend that owns one and we trade bikes all the time I ride the Suzuki M50, and he hates my bike and i love his bike better, he can pass me on any hill, scape his knees on the curves with his V Star. I always have to ride my M50 in the rear cause when im ahead of him he complains about the black smoke from my exhaust and the toxic fumes.
