Here we go, the first in a series of useless threads by me - please standby.

I always hear different types of music catagories. Which ones do you know, or if someone else list one you've never heard of, or think it is not a valid genre, chime in - General catagories like Country or Jazz are allowed as are sub-catagories like Classic Rock or Dixieland Jazz.

New Wave
Psychedelic
Ska
Reggae
Hip Hop
Trip Hop
Bluegrass
Punk
Acid Rock
Electronica

So, add to the list, comment on its invalid styles, or make a comment on genres in general.

My comment is, genre is often times not something a band will stick to its whole career. The Beatles started by doing old blues and skiffle, but eventually evolved into rock and roll. Johnny Cash was pretty clearly country, but he is the roots of rock and started in gospel music.

Everyone please feel free to digress further.

There are sub-cats to country. I'm a big country listener. My faves though are traditional country, modern (depending on artist) and most usually, Texas country. It does have roots in blues and rock which make for great kickbacks.

Did I misunderstand??

Nope, you've started just what I'm looking for - everyone has a different opinion on what genres there are and even make some up. What seperates the different country styles? What makes the division you've listed legit?

What the heck is Trip Hop?

I always get confused with the sub genres...I listen to pretty much everything anyways.

Interesting thread, but I just don't invest my thinking into the genres. I find that it pigeon holes too many artists. I remember looking for a Lyle Lovett CD once and they had it categorized in the country section. That would have made sense had that album been a country album like some of his others, but this particular album was more jazzy than country.

I would consider Ani DiFranco progressive rock, but she too does many, many different types of music.

I guess I just listen to what I like and don't pay much attention to its classification.

Cheers,
Loonette

It would be easier to list what I don't listen to:

- Country

+1

Also I don't listen to new rap, too violent, sexist, materialistic.
