Speaking of genres, and useless threads, name your favorite prog rock band. Progressive Rock, that is.

As previously stated by me - King Crimson. And they are true prog rock in the fact that they have never done pop music. They had a few entries into the charts in the 80s, and in the 70s 21st Century Scidzoid Man made them known for a time, but mostly they've done their own thing.

I also mentioned Rush, who was big on stories - long stories on multi-albums at times.

AND does that have anything to do with prog rock. Like Pink Floyd does a theme on The Wall - the story of a rock star going nuts. Is that progressive?

OR is prog rock legit, even.

I'm not sure of a clear definition of " Prog rock", but Led Zep is the only rock band for me, they were brilliant back in the day and still are today, their music is timeless. I have every album they ever cut including the BBC specials.

Savatage (if you don't know who they are, you really owe it to yourself to check out Handful of Rain and Dead Winter Dead), Dream Theater, and even a fair bit of Iron Maiden.

Yes is of course up there as well.

It's legit, it's good, and it is in many cases popular and influential.

I think the correlation between prog rock and concept albums is only incidental.. a concept album isn't necessarily prog rock or anything, and there is lots of prog rock not contained by the confines of a concept album

I think it has alot to do with prog, part of the genre is the "story telling".

I used to listen to Rush and I think I have most of Pink Floyd on my IPod.

My favorite prog bands/artists are Salem Hill, Porcupine Tree, and Kevin Gilbert.

You really need to check out Salem Hill and Kevin Gilbert, www.salemhill.com and www.kevingilbert.com respectiviely. Salem Hill actually makes money off of individual sales, so buy their albums! Kevin Gilbert accidentally killed himself back in the late 90's/early 00's (can't remember right now) but the money from his albums goes towards his family and a charity if I remember right.

Also, http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive-rock.asp has the best definition of prog rock, though you can't really define prog rock for sure they do get pretty damned close.

PS. Salem Hill is good peoples, the lead singer came and sang at my dad's wedding, and they know me fairly well and actually threw their new album, plus the sets drumsticks, and all sort of signatures to me when I couldn't make it to their last concert (because my evil mother doesn't like me spending time with my father). So please, please, please at least check them out.
