1972 honda xl 250 carb problem

I have a 1972 honda xl 250 that I'm trying to get running. Here is the history. The bike sat unused for a couple of years. I was able to crank it a couple of weeks ago by spraying starter fluid in the cylinder. After several attempts, it cranked and ran (though poorly) for several minutes. I decided to remove and clean the carbeurator before trying again.
After cleaning and reassembling the carb (this was my first such carb rebuild), I re-installed and made several unsuccessful attempts to get the bike to run again. Nothing. Tried the starter fluid. Nothing. The bike IS firing. I've noticed that when kicking the kick starter, I here what sounds to be a air being pressed out somewhere. However, this is not new. I've taken this own as a project and know that it is a financial loser, but still want to get it running.
