Just finished my 3rd activation of my M$ cd key in as many days. All except the last due to "In place upgrades" Microleghumpingsofts response? You've used it too many times and is now invalid.

It's been a swell week.
I think I'll go beat a lu$er with an improvised from Thicknet cat-o-nine.
God this is frustrating. Their stupid security hole ridden IE crap that caused my problem in the first place. I think its time to start running linux.
/quits ranting before he gives himself an anuerism.

Well, since they overprice the damn thing in the first place, I'd say just pirate it...
Seriously though, give them a call back, let them know what's happened, be entirely polite, and tell them that if they can't help you, you'll be getting in touch with your lawyer and he will contact them.

Indeed, you paid for it...you are using it within the terms of the license. The whole MS activation thing is ridiculous. If you don't have an internet connection or 2 hours to waste on hold on the phone, you cant even use the product you paid half a grand for.

Well that was fun. Called somewhere on earth. jabbered with 1st, a computer with yuppie tendencies. 2nd..someone who appareantly thinks indian accents are best understood when spoken as shrilly and quickly as possible, and 3rd my gf, who im now in trouble with for wanting to go see a friend tomorrow. but windows works.
let me revise that....it works as well as windoze ever works.
I knew it was gonna be one of those days, when my first experience of the morning was falling out of bed.
Oh well. at least the rootkit is gone.

Did you reinstall to get rid of a rootkit? If so - next time post for help here or send me a PM! I'd be happy to help you get rid of it rather than you having to reinstall everytime.

Heh, i believe i am one of the fortunate few to nab one of the first runs. AVG couldnt find it, housecall. FIrst infection i've had in about.... 3 years.
Generally when those two cant find it. I stare at the screen. zip all the files up and send em off somewhere else for a couple of months till i get some new definitions come out. Yesterday was one of those days where everything just piles on top of each other.
Do have a nifty tip for the general spy/virus cleanings. at least if you have domain admin rights. once you've narrowed the offending little critter down to a folder or file. You know the ones that refuse to be deleted etc. remove the check that specifys its inherited rights. Add in a not oft used security group that you are part of. Wont do you any good to change it to a group you arent a member of. remove All the others. Now unless the lil beastie is feeding a process you cant kill off to remove the memory resident portion.... good to go.
Handy lil trick for a very specific set of circumstances. But when the circumstances fit....very handy indeed.
Sorry about the rant. Was either that or start hitting people with loose equipment.

I'm seriously considering the linux option...if wine will let me run my games that is...since that is 99% of my home computing.

If you decide to run linux and don't know much about it - do yourself a favor and do it behind a simple firewall with NAT running (such as a cable/dsl router) - that way you won't get yourself hacked as easily.
I did virus/spyware/malware research/removal for an AV company for 3 1/2 years so I usually have good luck getting rid of even the unknowns til I can get an identity back from one of the labs. Sysinternals makes a lot of good utilities that are pretty useful for getting rid of lots of stuff on your system.

If you want something more user friendly than other distros I'd suggest trying Xandros Home Edition.
Good luck finding drivers for video and sound cards.
Or you can wait to get Vista....... along with Duke Nukem Forever.
