Removing evaporation system

I just got an 86 VF500 that needs some work. Everything's going smoothly, except some of the mounting hardware for the evaporation system is missing/damaged. Since that system was only on the California model, and I'm nowhere near CA, is it possible to just leave it out? Or should I start searching for new hardware?

As long as you aren't getting emissions tested you can leave it out.
Disclaimer: Tampering w/ emissions equipment could be a federal offense.

I was under the impression that since the system is only found on California emissions bikes to begin with, it would only be illegal to remove it in California? In any case, if I were to do it, would I need to change anything else? The charcoal canisters have a direct line to the carbs so I'm assuming I would have to seal those somehow. I'm somewhat new to motorcycles, so if there's anything I need to know about such an operation please let me know.
