chain is the best... it's what race bikes use.stephen85858585 wrote:can anyone give me just a quick straight up answer? or is it really more complicated than that?

if you won't accept this answer then it is more complicated than that.

What he was getting at was there is another thread running at the exact same time running about the exact same question in a different forum on the board.
It doesn't matter, buy whatever bike you like, The final drive should not come into the equation. If you like the bike and it is comfortable for you, great. You will then deal with the maintenance of the final drive. If you love the bike then maintenance is a secondary issue.

A dog had his chain reduced one link at a time, every few days, until his chain was so short he could barely move. He never resisted because he was conditioned to the loss of his freedom slowly, over time. Are we in this country becoming like the dog?

From reading this boards posts, it seems that most people are torn at the end before the buy of a bike. This is where it would make sense for things like options that are nice but not required, do make a difference in the end.t_bonee wrote: It doesn't matter, buy whatever bike you like, The final drive should not come into the equation. Asking "Which drive is best?" Is kind of like asking "Which TIRES are best?" or "Which helmet is best?"
It all depends on what you want: What fits your needs.
Chain drive is probably the most common. Requires regular lubrication (~500 mile intervals).
Belt drive is similar to chain, but VERY little maintenance is needed (no 500 mile interval oiling, etc.): Just a periodic check for damage and tension adjustment.
Shaft is generally found on the larger displacement engines because they are heavy.
