Here is my 'newbie' thread. I am 23 years old and have been racing dirt bikes since I was 17 years old. My riding experience is mainly on the dirt, even though I have been on a few local rides with my friends on their spare bikes. There is a lot of informative threads on this forum, and I have been reading through them for the last few hours. I have my mind set on a 600cc bike, because I know that I will grow out of a 500cc too fast. I have been on R6's and R1's, although I favor the R6 because the R1 is just too much for my skill. I look forward to meeting you all, and welcome any comments or suggestions.

Take the MSF if you haven't already.

And read the stickies concerning 500s and 'growing out of them too fast'. An R6 will produce more power than you'll use on the street most like.

Welcome! Where in Texas are you?

Just take your time and don't do anything stupid. I am a believer that with a level head, you can probably handle a 600cc sportbike. Practice...a lot. I'm still in the stage where I spend a lot of time in parking lots.

:welcome:

Thank you for the welcome. The first thread I read was the sticked one mentioned above. I do have experience on the road, and I will say that the R6 is definitely well suited for a track. I am very level headed, and safety is #1 on my mind. I am about to change insurance companies, and the MSF course is planned for the next few weeks. It will be nice to have my own bike, rather than using a friends ;)

The R6 will be plenty of power. You will love it.

If you can't ride an R1 then you can't ride an R6 either. End of.

I'd suggest you look to something more in the grey area of beginer street bikes. SV650 etc.

Once again I have as real problem with someone saying they will grow out of a 500cc roadbike.

I have considered a Katana, because I know its mild for a 600cc bike. I will look at the bikes you suggested..are they the naked bikes?

Kawasaki Ninja 650R

The following all use the same engine based on the SV650's lump and developed in collaboration with Suzuki:

Hyosung GT 650R

Hyosung GT 650S

Fischer 650

Sorry dude about getting twisted out of shape above, I just get a little wound up by the attitude that 600cc sportsbikes are the poor mans thou when in reality they are 160mph missiles.

That and the performance of most 500cc, and a number of 250cc bikes will exceed what is legal or even advisable on public roads.

It's nice enough, bu I've got a 'thing' about the Hyosung 650's and the Fischer...

There is just something real nice about it. To me iIt looks like a complete weapon, while keeping the performace down to levels that I won't instantly lose my licence for.
