New bike maintenance

#1 Unread post by i love to ride »

I just bought a 2006 Honda 919 and the first, 600 mile service is coming up. I am mechanically inclined so is this service something I might be able to do?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it is something you can do. Mostly just checking stuff. Do you have a service manual for your bike? Get one.

The first service however also involves double-checking bolts and connections when the bike was first assembled by the dealer. Personally, I think its a good idea to let the dealer do the first maintenance on the bike even if it costs a few hundred. It lets them correct any mistakes they might have made in the initial assembly.

CNF2002 nailed it good with his post. The only thing I'd add is that you should check with your dealer as to what effect it will have on your warranty if you do the servicing yourself. Some dealers really don't like it when you do that. They can't legally stop you, but should you ever have a warranty claim they can have it nullified by claiming you didn't do the maintenance properly.

Anyway, save all your receipts (oil, filters, spark plug, etc purchases) and don't forget to fill out the service coupons in the owners manual.
