Chics N Chaps rallies for good cause

After moving their annual breast cancer rally and poker run from Shady Valley Country Store to the Appalachian Fairgrounds last year, members of the Chics ‘N Chaps female motorcycle club decided to take their signature fund-raiser back to the home of the "Stripe-ed Snake."
Riders have counted 489 curves within a 12-mile radius of the Country Store, which sits at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 421 and state Route 133, making it a mecca for motorcyclists in Northeast Tennessee.
And that makes it the perfect location for a fund-raising event aimed at bikers, both male and female.
"It just seems like the most natural place to have it," said Chics ‘N Chaps president Kathy "Kat" Witt. "A lot of cyclists ride 421. It's really a nice spot for motorcyclists to stop, rest, get a pop, hang out. It's a perfect place."
Chics ‘N Chaps' third annual Breast Cancer Rally and Poker Run will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at Shady Valley.
Admission is $3 per person.
Bikers of both sexes will find plenty to do at the rally, which will feature live music, a bike show and loud pipes contest, bike games, silent and live auctions of donated items, plus door prizes to be given away throughout the day.
Visitors will also be able to browse the wares of this year's leather, jewelry and food vendors. Other vendors interested in setting up shop at the rally can call 292-7923.
After the action winds down, camping will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis for $10 per tent.
Registration for Sunday's poker run will begin at noon. The ride will start at 1 p.m. and begin and end at the Country Store. The cost of one hand is $5, or participants can get two hands for $8 or three hands for $12. Cash prizes will be determined by the number of participants.
All proceeds from the event will go to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research.
"When we first formed as a club, we decided to do two major charity events a year," Witt said. "We came up with the breast cancer rally because it's mostly women that it affects, and we have a passion for it because of that. And because it was our signature event from the very first, it's part of us, part of Chics ‘N Chaps. It's something that we do every year."
